City of Great Power,Mahabalipuram

The Town is small and therefore makes it possible to visit the best monuments in one day. It is recommended to start early as it can be very hot in the afternoons. The international cultural significance of Mahabalipuram was recognized in 1995 when Mamallapuram (Mahabalipuram) was granted the status of a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Mahabalipuram monasteries and magnificent stone caves are scattered across rocky, rocky hillsides, dotted with lush greenery. There are many man-made caves and monolithic structures, with various stages of demolition, scattered throughout the area, but the most advanced are the group, named after the five Pandava brothers of the Mahabharata - also known as the five ratha. About 4 km from Mahabalipuram, the Tiger Cave is an 8th-century shrine site dedicated to the Tiger goddess Durga. It is a shallow cave, lions forming the entrance, and it’s very close to the beach.

Morning and evening are the best time in Mahabalipuram, when nature invites  you calmly and the music of the waves almost overwhelms your soul to a higher level. After all, the ancient capital of the Pallava Kings is called the 'Lost City' and some believe it to have the largest architecture of its time.

How to get there     Mahabalipuram is located about 50 km from Chennai and the route is East Coast Route. There are regular Mahabalipuram buses from Chennai and it takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes to arrive. If you are traveling between Chennai and Mahabalipuram on the East Coast highway, one may want to plan enough time for interesting stops along the way. At the top of the charts to visit is the Cholamandalam Artists Village & Dakshina Chitra.
