Furthermore, as we move ahead, Thanjavur is a treasure place of all temples that tempts you to see and want more, the next temple that we talk about is the Gangaikonda Cholapuram temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva built by Rajendra Chola I, temple is known for architectural brilliance and therefore is a protected monument by the Archaeological survey of India. Along with Gangaikonda temple, Airavatesvara is beautiful Lord Shiva temple, located in the town of Darasuram also built by Raja Chola II. Along with Thanjavur, Kumbakonam town which is located 40 km away, also beholds a special place as a heritage of some most ancient Hindu temples and also for the Mahamaham festival.

It is a collection of some magnificent stone-crafted construction of beautiful and ancient monuments. Not only are the monuments worth appreciating but also stands tall is the structural temple Olakkannesvara. It was built in the 8th century and is situated directly above the Mahishsuramardini Mandapa on the hillock, which gives us the surreal scenic view of the town, it’s a visitors delight and a must visit destination for all the tourists. The Olakkannesvara temple is at times mistook as the Mahishasura temple, which is a dedicated to the incarnation of Lord Shiva. This temple is one of the group of monuments at Mahabalipuram that are designated as a UNESCO world heritage site since the year 1984.
The next in line is the Shore temple one of the oldest and richest stone temples in the history of South India, also classified as the UNESCO world heritage site. This temple was built by the Pallava dynasty with blocks of granite at the shore of the Bay of Bengal that beautifies every piece of breath-taking beauty ever made by man-kind.
Mahabalipuram is called the land of 7-pagodas, amongst which 6 temples have been submerged at the Coromandel Coast of Bay of Bengal about 60 kilometres south of Chennai all built in the 7th or 8th century. The cave temples such as the Varaha, Krishna and panchapandava’s are the mandapas or rockcut caves over-looking the coast, these temples are most savoured by the tourist for its structure and beauty. Mahabalipuram consists of some eye-catchy monuments of which is the Descent of the Ganges as it a largest open air rock relief in the world! This relief is carved on 2 monolithic rock boulders along with Arjuna’s Penance and is therefore protected the Archaeological Survey of India and UNESCO designated.
